36th International Conference on Boundary Elements and Other Mesh Reduction Methods

22 - 24 October 2013
Dalian, China

Overview

The 36th International Conference on Boundary Elements and Other Mesh Reduction Methods recently took place in the port city Dalian in China. The meeting was chaired by Prof Xiaowei Gao from the Dalian University of Technology (DLUT), Prof Carlos A Brebbia, Director of Wessex Institute of Technology, and Prof Alex Cheng from University of Mississippi at Oxford, USA.

This is the first time that the BEM/MRM conference series held in China. The effort is to recognize the recent development of the field made by the Chinese researchers. The conference was well attended by about 60 presenters, and students of the DLUT. The continuous success of the conference since the first meeting took place in 1978 indicates the strength of the work carried out by different groups around the world. The history of the conference traces the evolution of the methods since BEM grew from classical boundary integral techniques up to more versatile and recent Mesh Reduction Methods.

The Conference has produced a series of volumes in which all major developments in the field have been reported. This valuable collection has been available in digital form since 1993 when the volumes started to be archived in the eLibrary of Wessex Institute (http://library.witpress.com/) where they can be easily accessible by the International Scientific Community.

The Conference was opened by Profs Gao and Cheng, and greeted by the officials of the university.

The conference was then divided into two parallel sessions, one on the Boundary Element Method, and the other on Mesh reduction methods.

EABE Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods (EABE) took place during the first evening of the meeting, presided by its Editor in Chief, Prof Alex Cheng and with the participation of additional Editorial Board members

Excursion

During the last day of the conference, delegates were taken to a well know tourist attraction near Dalian, the Yiwu Lvshan Mountain. Yiwu Lvshan Mountain, called Yuweilv, Wulv (no worries) Mountain during ancient times and Lvshan Mountain nowadays is a state level natural preservation zone. The mountain was considered "Beizhen" of the "Four Large Mounts". The ancient architecture was mostly built in the Liao and Jin Dynasties and repaired in Qing. Among all the buildings, the most famous one is the Beizhen Temple which lies at the foot of Yiwu Lvshan Mountain. The Large Temple consists of all kinds of architectural features such as Shenma Gate, Zhonggu House, Yuxian Palace, etc. The delegates enjoyed the outing.

Conference Dinner

Following Chinese tradition, conference attendees were treated by a number of banquets with an abundance of food. The Conference banquets took place in China Business Executive Academy, the Tianshun Fishing Port, and the DUT International Convention Center.
